One of the first questions in a second-citizenship consultation is also one of the most legally sensitive: can I keep my original nationality? There is no universal answer. A client should never sign a renunciation declaration casually. It may affect a spouse, children, property rights, inheritance, public-office eligibility, or the ability to return to the country of birth. The consequences can be difficult to reverse. Where the existing nationality law is unclear, obtain an opinion from a lawyer or the relevant embassy before making an irreversible statement.
A useful file contains the original passport, nationality certificate, birth and parentage records, any prior naturalisation papers, and correspondence with the original government. Different spellings and changes of name should be reconciled before the new application. The objective is not to hide a nationality. It is to disclose the complete nationality history accurately.
