Adverse Media: Explain It Before Someone Else Does

A search result can be old, inaccurate, or genuinely serious. It can also belong to somebody with the same name. Adverse media CBI due diligence is not a popularity contest and it is not solved by pretending the article does not exist.

Authorities and compliance teams may review public reporting about corruption, fraud, sanctions, organised crime, serious financial misconduct, or other matters relevant to integrity. The presence of an article is not the same as a finding. Context determines what the article means.

Make a media response file

•Save the article, date, publisher, and URL.

•Identify whether the applicant, a family member, or another person is named.

•Compare the article with passports, dates of birth, companies, and locations.

•Record whether the report describes an allegation, investigation, charge, judgment, correction, or rumour.

•Collect official documents that confirm the outcome.

•Prepare a short factual response and have counsel review it where the issue is sensitive.

A response should not attack a journalist or provide a long emotional defence. It should answer the practical question: what happened, what was the applicant’s role, and what is the legal status today? If the article is wrong, show why. If it is partly right, correct the record without creating a second inconsistency.

FATF’s risk-based approach does not treat every customer with a public profile as a criminal. It does require institutions to understand relevant risks and apply appropriate measures . That is why an unexplained article may matter even when there is no conviction.

Applicants should not change a spelling, remove a social-media page, or ask an intermediary to “make the story disappear.” Those actions can look worse than the original report. Preserve records. Use lawful correction or legal channels where appropriate.
